Biographical Information

Steve Comer was the definition of a "finesse" pitcher, often pitching entire games with quality outings without recording a single strikeout. He had a terrific 1979 season with the Texas Rangers, avoiding the sophomore slump in style by going 17-12 with a 3.68 ERA in 36 starts. He also established a career high in strikeouts, 86, in 242 1/3 innings. He had a solid 1981 as a reliever (8-2, 2.56, 6 saves in 77 1/3 innings) after a bloated 7.99 ERA in a brief 1980, finishing his career with three seasons of 5-plus ERAs in more limited duty.

Following his playing career, Comer was briefly a member of the Cleveland Indians coaching staff in 1987. He was also pitching coach of the Maine Guides in 1986, Kinston Indians in 1987, and Orlando Twins in 1988.
