Biographical Information

Pitcher Stephen Tarpley was drafted twice, first out of high school in the 8th round of the 2011 amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians, and then out of junior college in the 3rd round of the 2013 amateur draft, by the Baltimore Orioles. After signing with the Orioles, he made 7 starts for the GCL Orioles in 2013, putting up a 2.14 ERA in 21 innings. In 2014, he was assigned to the Aberdeen Iron Birds of the New York-Penn League, where he was 3-5, 3.68 in 13 games, including 12 starts. the lefthander pitched 66 innings and struck out 60.

On January 27, 2015, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with a player to be named later, in return for major league outfielder Travis Snider. On August 30, 2016 he and Tito Polo were the two players to be named later sent by the Pirates to the New York Yankees to complete an earlier deal for P Ivan Nova.

Tarpley made his major league debut with the Yankees as a September call-up in 2018 and pitched well in 10 games, with an ERA of 3.00 and 13 strikeouts in 9 innings. That was enough to convince the Yankees to add him to their postseason roster. As the last member of the staff, his only appearance came in the disastrous Game 3 of the Division Series against the Boston Red Sox on October 8th. He entered the game in the 8th inning with the Yankees already down, 11-1, and he proceeded to surrender 3 more runs on 4 hits and a walk. Things were so bad by the time he completed the inning that manager Aaron Boone asked back-up catcher Austin Romine to pitch the final inning.
