Biographical Information[edit]

Clarence "Soup" Campbell played outfield for two seasons with the Cleveland Indians. For the 1941 team, he was a frequently used fourth outfielder, playing in 104 games and hitting .250, his final big league season. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 2, 1942, missing the 1942-1945 seasons. Campbell returned to play for the Baltimore Orioles (IL) in 1946-1947. He hit .321 with 10 triples for New Orleans in 1939 and managed in the minors in 1952 at Lexington.

Campbell is one of more than 20 major league players named Campbell, but the only one formally called "Soup". A couple others were nicknamed "Soup". He is the only major league non-pitcher to come out of Hampden-Sydney College (through 2019).
