Biographical Information[edit]
Sung-yong Lee played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 18 years.
Lee played for South Korea in the 1993 Intercontinental Cup. He hit .333/.456/.833 with 7 RBI in 8 games. He homered off Nicaragua's Orlando Cuevas and Italy's Fulvio Valle. Orestes Kindelán beat him out as the All-Star first baseman. The Pacific Dolphins selected him in the first round of the 1994 KBO draft, and he hit .229/.328/.371 in 84 games in his first season. Lee then crushed 11 homers with a .255/.321/.468 batting line in 1995, and he recorded a .280/.389/.447 batting line with 12 homers in 1996. Hyundai fell to the Haitai Tigers in the 1996 Korean Series. He improved to .311/.419/.490 with 9 homers in 1997, and he was 8th in doubles (28, tied with Jong-beom Lee). Lee crushed 10 homers with a .278/.351/.438 batting line in 1998, and he shined in the 1998 Korean Series. Facing Hyuk Son of the LG Twins in Game 6, Lee crushed a game-winning, 2-run home run to secure the first title in the history of the Hyundai Unicorns.
The Seoul native continued his solid performance in 1999, hitting .264/.380/.453 with 14 homers in 109 games. Lee then crushed 15 homers with a .285/.377/.495 batting line, and he collected 10 homers with a .300/.378/.442 batting line in 2001. He blasted a career-high 19 homers with a .284/.361/.472 batting line in 2002, then he hit .294/.355/.448 with 18 homers and 25 doubles in 2003. Hyundai beat the SK Wyverns in the 2003 Korean Series for his second title. Lee then had a career-high 29 doubles with 9 homers and a .293/.382/.412 batting line in 2004, and he was 5th in doubles (tied with Jong-beom Lee and Sung-ho Jang) and 7th in RBI (between Sung-heon Hong and Han-soo Kim). He played 105 games with 14 homers and a .252/.357/.418 batting line in 2005, and that was his last season to have more than 10 homers.
Lee hit .287/.389/.376 with 7 homers in 2006, then he recorded a .301/.390/.391 batting line in 2007. The Unicorns became the Woori Heroes in 2008, and Lee hit .270/.349/.327 in 109 games. He collected 20 doubles with a .296/.376/.401 batting line in 2009, then he had a .274/.350/.338 batting line in 2010. Lee became the first player to play 2,000 games in a single team in 2011, and his batting line was .253/.337/.301 in 88 games that season. He then announced his retirement, and he became the batting coach for the KT Wiz from 2014 to 2018. He was named the general manager of KT in 2019, a role he held until he was fired after the 2022. The SSG Landers named him their new manager in 2024.
Overall, Lee hit .281/.369/.421 with 1,727 hits and 162 homers in 18 seasons in the KBO.
