Biographical Information[edit]

Sony Suarez pitched in the minors for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox and for the Dominican national team.

Suarez was 2-3 with a 4.64 ERA for Chivaco in the 2000 Venezuelan Summer League. He had a 9.53 ERA and no decisions for the 2001 DSL Pirates. Moving to the DSL White Sox in 2002, he improved to 7-2, 1.88. [1] He tied for second on his team in ERA. [2]

He pitched for the Dominicans in the 2002 Intercontinental Cup; his 2.57 ERA was second on the staff behind Fabio Castro but he also allowed four unearned runs in his seven innings (9 H, 5 BB, 9 K). Only Roberto Novoa struck out more for the Dominican team. [3] He won a Bronze Medal with the Dominican Republic at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games. [4]

The Monte Cristi native came stateside in 2003, going 2-4 with a save and a 3.70 ERA for the Bristol White Sox but striking out 59 in 56 IP; he also allowed 7 hits and 7 runs in 3 1/3 IP for the Great Falls White Sox (0-1). He tied his Dominican national team staffmate Castro for 6th in the Appalachian League in whiffs. [5] In 2004, he was 5-2 with two saves and a 5.37 ERA for Great Falls to end his career; he walked 41 in 63 2/3 IP. He tied for 6th in the Pioneer League in wins, was 10th with 62 K (between Brian Akin and Ramon Ramirez) and tied for the most walks.
