Biographical Information[edit]

Shinji Udaka pitched three years in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Udaka threw a no-hitter against Kyoto University in college and had a 40-inning scoreless inning streak as a junior. In the 1998 Baseball World Cup, he was 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA for the Japanese national team. He was picked in the first round of the 1998 NPB draft by the Nippon Ham Fighters. He debuted with Nippon Ham in 1999, going 2-2 with a 4.81 ERA in 33 2/3 IP over 12 games. He pitched 8 games (11 1/3 IP) in 2000, getting no decisions and allowing 11 hits, 5 walks and six strikeouts. He had a 2.38 ERA, but a 5.56 RA. In 2001, he again worked 11 1/3 IP (11 games), allowing 8 hits, 6 walks and five strikeouts. His ERA was again deceptive - 0.79 - as three of the four runs he allowed were unearned. He spent the rest of his career in ni-gun, having compiled a 2-2, 3.51 record in 31 games in NPB. He moved to the Yokohama BayStars after 2003 in a trade with Ken Kadokura for Eiji Yano and Kazuo Fukumori and was released the next year.
