Biographical Information[edit]

Shawon Dunston, Jr. is the son of Shawon Dunston. The Chicago Cubs picked him in the 11th round of the 2011 amateur draft, 29 years after his father had been taken first overall by the Cubs. Dunston was an outfielder in high school. Chicago had already taken one son of a former sports star with 7th-rounder Trevor Gretzky. He was signed by scout Rick Schroeder for a reported $1.275 million, passing up a scholarship to Vanderbilt University. He made his pro debut with the 2012 Boise Hawks but was hitting only .185/.254/.323 after 19 games and was sent down to the AZL Cubs.
