Biographical Information[edit]
Sergio Valenzuela was signed by scouts Victor Favela and Julian Perez for the Atlanta Braves in 2001. He made his pro debut with the 2003 DSL Braves 1, going 6-2 with a 0.96 ERA, allowing only 34 hits in 66 innings. He was 5th in the pitching-strong Dominican Summer League in ERA.
Valenzuela had a 1-2, 3.00 record for the 2004 GCL Braves when he made his US debut. In '05, he fell to 1-4, 3.60 with the GCL Braves but only walked four in 35 innings. In 2006, Sergio was 3-4 with a 6.04 ERA for the Danville Braves. Valenzuela split 2007 between the Rome Braves (1-3, 7.12, .350 opponent average) and Myrtle Beach Pelicans (6.88 in 18 G, .318 opponent average).
The Cincinnati Reds chose Valenzuela from the Braves in the 2007 Rule V Draft. He would spend 2008 in Mexico, though, going 8-4 with a 4.89 ERA for the Monclova Steelers. With the Mazatlan Deer in 2008-2009, he helped his team to the title. In the 2009 Caribbean Series, he allowed 5 hits and 4 walks in 3 2/3 IP but escaped with only two runs being charged to him. He was 3-1 with a 3.11 ERA for Monclova in '09.
