Sergio Espinal has coached college baseball for over 15 years.

Espinal was a teammate of Pete Incaviglia, Robin Ventura and Doug Dascenzo in college and went to the College World Series. In the 1985 amateur draft, he was picked in the 15th round by the Chicago Cubs, three rounds after they took Dascenzo. Returning for his senior season, he went 41-for-46 in steal attempts, tying Eric Mangham for 10th in NCAA Division I. The Cubs chose him in the 24th round of the 1986 amateur draft.

Assigned to the Geneva Cubs, Sergio hit only .207/.314/.288 and fielded .929 at second, though he did swipe 15 bases in 20 tries. Geneva set a New York-Penn League record with 175 steals, led by Ced Landrum's 49. Moving up to the Peoria Chiefs in '87, Espinal improved to .249/.325/.311 but only stole 5 bases in 8 tries. He was used as a utility infielder. He ended his playing career in 1988 with the Chiefs (.209/.305/.319, 4 SB, 3 CS) and Charleston Wheelers (.194/.289/.225, 3 SB). He had batted .217/.311/.291 in 245 games in the minors, stealing 27 bases in 38 tries.

Espinal then became a coach. He was an assistant at North Alabama while earning his master's degree, then was head coach of Lincoln University of Missouri from 1993-2000. He was head coach of Northeastern State University from 2001-2011.

Espinal was an assistant coach at Rogers State University in 2013 and head coach at Mathis High School starting in 2014 [1].
