Biographical Information[edit]

Sergei Makarov pitched for the Ukrainian national team.

He pitched in Ukraine's first European Championship game, relieving Vladimir Kadiev with one out in the 5th against the Netherlands in their first game in the 1995 European Championship. He walked four and allowed one hit and one run in 1 2/3 IP, fanning three as the team's top pitcher in their debut. He later got a start against Sweden but got knocked around (6 H, 7 R, 6 ER in 1 1/3 IP) before Gennadi Mahno took over; he took the loss to Magnus Jönsson. His 19.80 ERA in three games was the Ukraine's second-highest (Andrey Egorov was higher) but his 5 K were second to Oleg Venger. He tied for 9th in the Euros with nine walks but also tied Michael Leys for 8th in K/IP. [1]

In the 1997 European Championship, he was 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in the round-robin phase. [2] In the consolation pool, though, he got Ukraine's second win, beating Slovenia with a complete game (7 K, 0 BB, 4 H). [3]
