Scott Metcalf played two years in the minor leagues and seven in the Australian Baseball League, once being named MVP.

Metcalf debuted in the ABL in 1990-1991, going 3 for 3 with a double, home run and 3 RBI for his hometown Perth Heat. In 1991-1992, he hit .408/.462/.620; had he qualified, he would have led the league in both average and OBP. He won Rookie of the Year honors for his efforts.

Metcalf was signed by the Baltimore Orioles and assigned to the Bluefield Orioles. He hit a productive .298/~.355/.358 in his professional debut, just missing the Appalachian League top 10 in batting average. He hit .247/.286/.280 in a disappointing 1992-1993 ABL campaign; as he was signed to a US contract, he had to use a wood bat instead of the aluminum one he had employed in 1991-1992.

Scott batted .256/~.320/.341 as the regular DH for the 1993 Albany Polecats in his second and last season in the minor leagues. Back in Australia in the winter of 1993-1994, he produced at a .282/.349/.462 clip for Perth.

Metcalf had a career season in the 1994-1995 Australian Baseball League, hitting .365/.412/.750 for the Heat and setting a new home run record with 22. He also led the ABL in hits (76, 11 ahead of Kimera Bartee), RBI (67, 11 ahead of Dave Nilsson) and extra-base hits (36). He was second to Nilsson in average and slugging and ranked 5th with 47 runs. He was named as the All-Star third baseman and won MVP honors as well.

Metcalf slipped a bit in 1995-1996, hitting .311/.363/.634 with 44 RBI in 43 games. He was third in the league in RBI and 4th in home runs (14) and made the All-Star team at DH. In his final season of 1996-1997, Scott slumped to .268/.329/.353 while Perth won the title.

Metcalf hit .316 and slugged .550 in ABL play. He was 7th in league history in average, 20th in home runs (46) and 10th in slugging.
