Biographical Information[edit]

Satomi Bando pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 20 years.

Bando was signed by the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1960, but he only pitched 2 games in his first season. He recorded a 3.86 ERA in 16 games in 1961, then he went 2-4 with a 4.76 ERA in 1962. Bando was then used as a full-time reliever, and his ERA was 3.81 in 33 games in 1963. He had a 4.83 ERA in 34 relief outings in 1964, and he lowered his ERA to 4.11 in 27 games in 1965. Bando nearly missed the entire 1966 season due to injuries, and he joined the rotation in the next season.

The Tokushima native was 8-15 with a 3.86 ERA in 1967, and he tied Tetsuya Yoneda for 5th in losses in the Pacific League. Bando then went 12-14 with a 4.04 ERA in 1968, ranking 10th in strikeouts (between Koichiro Sasaki and Akio Masuda) and 6th in appearances (between Kazuhisa Inao and Sasaki). He was 5-2 with a 3.26 ERA in 1969, and he went 3-5 with a 3.23 ERA in 1970. Bando was turned into a reliever again in 1971, but his ERA was 5.18 in 31 games. He bounced back soon in 1972, and he had a 2.52 ERA in 40 appearances.

Bando recorded a 2.82 ERA with a 4-9 record in 1973, then he joined the rotation again in 1974. He was 10-10 with a 3.56 ERA in that season, and he tied Fumio Narita, Choji Murata and Akira Kawahara for 9th in losses. Bando had a 5-10 record with a 4.36 ERA in 1975, and he went 7-6 with a 2.07 ERA in 1976. His ERA was 3.97 in 18 games in 1974, and he returned to the bullpen in 1978. Bando recorded a 2.49 ERA in 32 appearances in 1978, but his ERA rose to 5.75 in 16 games in 1979. He announced his retirement after the 1979 season, and he became a coach. He coached Kintetsu from 1982 to 1987, 1989 to 1992 and in 1994. He also managed their minor league team in 1988 and 1993, and he was one of their scouts from 1995 to 1998.

Overall, Bando was 79-98 with a 3.69 ERA, struck out 857 and pitched 1,746 2/3 innings in 20 years in NPB. As of 2023, he was 53th in appearances (tied with Osamu Nomura) and 95th in homers allowed, between Takenori Emoto and Toyohiko Yoshida.
