Biographical Information

Satchel Davis pitched for the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro National League in 1940 (4-0, 2.65). He also pitched 5 2/3 innings that summer for the Mexico City Red Devils, not allowing an earned run. He was with the Cleveland Buckeyes of the Negro American League in 1943 (0-1, 9.00) and 1947 (0-1, 16 H, 14 R in 6 2/3 IP). One source says he also pitched for the New York Black Yankees. He pitched for the minor Boston Blues as well.

While with the Elite Giants in 1940, he tossed a shortened combined no-hitter on May 30 with Roy Campanella as his catcher. In the scheduled second game of a doubleheader (thus a 7-inning contest), he pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings against the Newark Eagles but left at that point after walking the bases loaded. Willie Hubert relieved, escaped the jam and completed the no-no.

In 1943, he joined the United States Army and fought in World War II, remaining in the service through the end of the 1945 season.
