Biographical Information

Sammy Ellis had an excellent season as the Cincinnati Reds' top relief pitcher in 1964, saving 14 games with a 10-3 record and a 125/28 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He moved to the starting rotation in 1965 and made the All-Star team while winning 22 games and striking out 183 batters. Only 24 at the time, he seemed to have a great future ahead of him, but after a 12-19 season in 1966, he developed arm problems and was out of baseball by mid-1969.

Ellis later became a successful pitching coach for a number of teams in the 1980s and 1990s. He coached for the Fort Lauderdale Yankees in 1977 nd Columbus Clippers in 1980-1982. He was a New York Yankees coach in 1982, from 1983 to 1984, and again in 1986. He was then a roving minor league pitching coach for the Chicago White Sox in 1987, and on the big league Sox staff from 1989 to 1991, then spent the next season across town as a Chicago Cubs coach in 1992. He was later a member of the Seattle Mariners staff in 1993 and 1994, the Boston Red Sox staff in 1996, and the Baltimore Orioles in 2000.
