Biographical Information[edit]

The brother of Esteban Loaiza, Sabino Loaiza pitched for 12 years in the Mexican League. In the 1990 Baseball World Cup, Loaiza allowed 8 runs in 3 innings for the Mexican national team. He also was with Mexico for the 1990 Goodwill Games. He debuted professionally with the Campeche Pirates in 1993 and went 1-5 with a 5.57 ERA, walking 51 in 63 innings. The next year, he was 1-1 with two saves and a 4.93 ERA in 23 outings, walking 32 in 45 2/3 frames. He was 0-5 in '95 with a 6.31 ERA. In 25 2/3 innings, he walked 21 and fanned just six. In 1996, Sabino improved to 5-2, 3.75 in 18 games and cut his walk rate (33 in 69 2/3 IP). In 1996, Loaiza pitched for the Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks and went 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA in 6 games. The next year, he had a 0-1, 6.48 record for Thunder Bay. Loaiza was a regular member of Campeche's rotation from 1997-1999, posting lines of 7-10, 3.72; 5-11, 4.21 and 8-7, 3.19. In 1998 and 1999, he allowed just eight homers in 269 1/3 innings. He was 16th in the Liga in ERA in '99, his career year. The next season, he fell to 2-11 with a 6.65 ERA. He walked 23 in 69 innings but allowed 96 hits. In '01, he went 4-9, 4.93 for Campeche and then was 0-4 with a 6.05 ERA the next year for Campeche and the Saltillo Saraperos. In 2003, Sabino was 4-5 with a 5.04 ERA for the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos. He concluded his career with the '04 Toros de Tijuana, posting a 9.39 ERA and 2.48 WHIP for his hometown team. Overall, he had a 37-70 record, a far cry from what his brother would achieve.
