Biographical Information[edit]
Ryosuke Morioka played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.
Morioka was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the first round of the 2002 NPB draft, but he spent his first 6 seasons in the minors; he only got 48 at-bats combined with the big club. He had a conflict with coach Hideki Takayanagi in 2008, and the Dragons released him. The Yakult Swallows picked him up, and Morioka went 9-for-43 in 2009. He played 21 games with a .256/.333/.326 batting line in 2010, but hit .324/.375/.390 in the minors; he won the Eastern League batting crown by .004 ahead of Atsushi Kita. He recorded a .256/.326/.279 batting line in 2011.
The Nagasaki native finally broke out in 2012, and he played 100 games with a .249/.293/.318 batting line. He was Yakult's starting shortstop in 2013, and he hit .247/.333/.298 with 10 doubles. Morioka collected 14 doubles with a .276/.315/.362 batting line in 2014, but he slumped to .188/.246/.250 in 2015. He was 2-for-31 in 2016, then he announced his retirement. Morioka was assistant fielding coach for the Swallows in 2017, and he became the fielding coach for their minor league team from 2018 to 2019 and for their big club from 2020 to 2024. He jumped to the Rakuten Golden Eagles as their batting coach in 2025.
Overall, Morioka hit .241/.299/.307 with 290 hits and 7 homers in 14 seasons in NPB.
