Biographical Information[edit]
Ryohei Tanaka pitched in the minor leagues and Nippon Pro Baseball. His brother Yasuhiro Tanaka also pitched in NPB.
Tanaka was drafted by the Chiba Lotte Marines in the first round of the 2000 NPB draft, and he pitched 5 games with a 8.10 ERA in 2003. He stayed in the minors in the rest of his career, and the Marines released him in 2008. He then signed with the Baltimore Orioles, and he went 4-4 with a 3.00 ERA and 3 saves for the Bowie Baysox in 2009. He was 1-1 with a 6.86 ERA for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the winter, then he had a 8-12 record with a 5.64 ERA for the Bayson in 2010. Tanaka was 9-5 with a 3.33 ERA for the Frederick Keys in 2011, and he pitched 6 games with a 3.09 ERA in Bowie. He also had 2 appearances for the AAA Norfolk Tides, and his ERA was 3.60. He walked only 22 in 135 1/3 innings that season. He tied Zach Clark, Tim Bascom and Mike Ballard for 5th in the O's chain in wins. Tanaka announced his retirement after that season. He later coached Toyo Gakuen University, and he became a scout for the Marines in 2023.
