Biographical Information[edit]
Rubi Silva was an outfielder for La Habana. He hit .212 in 66 AB as a rookie in 2007-2008. In 2008-2009, he batted .276/.305/.428 and led the Serie Nacional with 10 triples. He also had 16 outfield assists. He had appeared for the Cuban junior national team. He defected following the season and signed with the Chicago Cubs in January 2011 at the same time as former teammate Yaniel Cabezas.
He made his US debut with the Peoria Chiefs and also played for the Daytona Cubs in his first season, hitting .285/.305/.392 in 122 games. He made it all the way to AAA in the Cubs' system, reaching the level with the Iowa Cubs of the Pacific Coast League in 2015, when he hit .282/.295/.487 in 98 games. He had good power (16 doubles, 6 triples and 11 homers) but a complete lack of walks (5, against 83 strikeouts) prevented him from moving up to the majors. Starting in 2016, he played in the Mexican League and independent leagues. He was still active in 2022, with 17 games for the Piratas de Campeche, although he seemed to be nearing the end of the line by that point.
