Biographical Information[edit]
Roy Yamamura was inducted in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021 for his role as a baseball pioneer in Canada. He was the shortstop, batting champion and manager for the amateur Vancouver Asahi baseball team that represented British Columbia's Japanese-Canadian community in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a top player in Vancouver, BC's amateur leagues, but in the 1940s was forcibly interned as part of the Canadian government mis-treatment of its citizens of Japanese origin during World War II.
He moved to Toronto, ON after the war and continued to play, organize and coach for amateur teams among the Japanese community there and in Hamilton, ON and Montréal, QC. Prior to his own induction, the Asahi team he helped to set up had been inducted as a team in 2003.
