Biographical Information[edit]

Roy Merritt pitched in the minor leagues and the CPBL.

Merritt was drafted by the New York Mets in the 29th round of the 2007 Amateur Draft, and he was 1-2 with a 2.88 ERA in his first season as a pro player for the Kingsport Mets. He had a solid 1.49 ERA in 25 relief outings with the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2008, but he allowed 5 runs in 7 2/3 innings with the high-class-A St. Lucie Mets. Merritt also pitched in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League and Puerto Rican Winter League after the 2008 season. He notched 14 saves for the Binghamton Mets in 2009, and his ERA was 3.45 in 56 appearances. He was 2nd in saves in the Eastern League (11 behind Anthony Slama) and he tied Chad Rhoades as the leader in games pitched.

The Texan stayed in Binghamton in 2010, and he had a 3.86 ERA in 60 relief outings with 9 saves. He led the EL in appearances again, and he was 7th in saves (between Sergio Escalona and Manny Alvarez). Merritt also pitched 4 games for the AAA Buffalo Bisons, but his ERA was 14.54. He then slumped to a 5.26 ERA in 31 games in Binghamton in 2011, and the Mets released him before the 2012 season. Merritt then signed with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League, and he was 8-8 with a 3.22 ERA in 2012 as a starter. His ERA was 1.96 in 38 games in 2013, and he signed with the Lamigo Monkeys in 2014. Merritt was 6-4 with a 3.82 ERA with the Monkeys, and he would have ranked 2nd in ERA had he qualified (.34 behind Kai-Wen Cheng). The Monkeys released him in August, and he returned to the Patriots.

Merritt only pitched 2 games for the Patriots in 2015, and he was 7-5 with a 2.53 ERA for the Sugar Land Skeeters. He improved to 8-2 with a 2.99 ERA in 2016, and the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him with a minor league contract on August 24. His ERA was 4.26 in 3 games with the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Merritt then was 8-6 with a 4.81 ERA for the Rieleros de Aguascalientes in 2017, and he was 4-2 with a 4.05 ERA for them in 2018. He went to the Olmecas de Tabasco in July, and he was 2-1 with a 2.82 ERA. Merritt returned to the Skeeters in 2019, and he was 2-3 with a 2.70 ERA in that season.
