Biographical Information

Roy Elsh played three years with the Chicago White Sox, beginning at age 32, but was a major league prospect as early as seven years before.

A 1916 article in the New York Times has a picture of Elsh (called E.R. Elsh), and says that Zeke Wrigley recommended him to the New York Giants and John McGraw.

The Pirates tried to buy Elsh from Sioux City in 1922, but the deal was scotched when the Chicago White Sox claimed they had first call on players from Sioux City. Elsh, called "Eugene Elsh" in a New York Times article and said to be the runner-up for the Western League batting title, was awarded to Chicago by Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

Elsh had good speed, stealing 24 bases in the majors while getting caught only 9 times. His best year with the bat was 1924, when he hit .306 on a team that hit .288.
