Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Ronnie Corona played in the minor and independent leagues from 2000 to 2004.

He was drafted four times. Initially, he was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 59th round of the 1997 amateur draft out of high school, but opted not to sign. He was then taken by the Texas Rangers in the 29th round of the 1998 amateur draft out of Cypress College, on pick after pitcher Cliff Bartosh, but again, did not sign. The St. Louis Cardinals took him out of Cypress College in the 40th round of the 1999 amateur draft, then the Minnesota Twins selected him in the 6th round of the 2000 amateur draft out of Cal State-Fullerton, two picks ahead of pitcher Brian Bass, when he finally inked a deal.

Corona pitched for two clubs his first pro campaign, going 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA in 24 games (one start). In 37 innings, he struck out 53 batters. The next year, he had a 2.19 mark in 16 games (7 starts) for the Fort Myers Miracle and in 2002, back with Fort Myers, he had a 2.25 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 60 innings. He pitched briefly for the New Britain Rock Cats in 2003 and 2004, posting marks of 3.46 and 10.13, respectively -- he tossed only 23 2/3 innings those years, combined. He made a single start with the independent St. Paul Saints in 2004, as well, tossing six innings and earning the win.

Overall, Corona went 10-8 with a 3.07 ERA in 71 games (20 starts). In 176 innings, he allowed just 153 hits, while striking out 200 batters.
