Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Ronaldo Hernandez was signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as an amateur free agent out of Colombia on August 9, 2014. He began his pro career with a couple of seasons in the Dominican Summer League, with the DSL Rays in 2015 and the DSL Rays 1 in 2015. He did not play much the first year - only 44 at-bats in 13 games - but in 2015 he hit .340 with 6 homers and 35 RBIs in 54 games. He made the jump to the United States in 2017, when he was with the Princeton Rays of the Appalachian League. His stats were very similar to those he had posted the previous year: a .332 average, 5 homers and 40 RBIs in 54 games. He was named a Rookie League All-Star after the season.
In 2018, he had his first taste of full-season ball, with the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the Midwest League. He continued to impress with a .284 average, 21 homers and 79 RBIs in 109 games. He earned a bevy of awards for his performance, including being named a mid-season All-Star, a low Class A postseason All-Star and an organizational All-Star. He earned another honor the next year when he was named to the American League team for the 2019 Futures Game. He was with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League that year, where he hit .265 with 9 homers and 60 RBIs in 103 games. he was then selected to play in the Arizona Fall League, where he continued to shine, batting .359 in 11 games and being selected for the Rising Stars Game, the circuit's All-Star contest. He then was idle during the 2020 season as the minor leagues were shut down, spending the time at the Rays' alternate training site.
On February 17, 2021, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox alongside fellow prospect Nick Sogard in return for two pitchers with major league experience, Chris Mazza and Jeffrey Springs. He was promoted to the major league roster by the Washington Nationals on April 15, 2022, but was optioned down to Triple-A on April 20 without appearing in a game for the big league club.
