Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Roger "Bo" Quiroga was a first-round pick who never got past A ball.

He was selected by the Washington Senators in the first round of the 1971 amateur draft with the seventh overall pick, following Danny Goodwin, Jay Franklin, Tommy Bianco, Condredge Holloway, Roy Branch and Roy Thomas. However, before ever playing a game in their organization, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies as the final player sent in compensation for Curt Flood. He split 1972 between the Pulaski Phillies (3-4, 4.42) and Spartanburg Phillies (6-6, 5.86). With the 1973 Rocky Mount Phillies, Roger was 5-7 with 3 saves and a 4.20 ERA, walking 60 while striking out 78 in 122 innings. He missed 1974 due to injury. In '75, he improved to 10-4, 2.67 for Rocky Mount (finishing 6th in the Carolina League in ERA) in his final minor league campaign as injuries ended his career. Overall, he had a record of 24-21, 4.08 as a pro.

After baseball, Quiroga went to college and worked in banking for many years. He was mayor of his hometown of Galveston, Texas, from 1998 to 2004. He then coached for O'Connell College Preparatory High School.
