Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Roddery Muñoz made his major league debut as the 27th man on the Miami Marlins' roster, added in order to start the second game of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on April 20th. The Marlins were just 5-16 heading into the game and he proved to be a bit of a bright spot as he gave up only 2 hits in 5 innings while walking 1 and striking out 7, although both of the hits were solo homers - by Cody Bellinger in the 1st and by Alexander Canario to lead off the 6th, after which he was replaced by Anthony Bender with the Marlins holding a 3-2 lead. However, Bender was not able to hold the slim lead, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, and the Fish lost the game, 5-3.
Muñoz had originally been signed by the Atlanta Braves on June 11, 2018 as an undrafted international free agent, at the same time as his twin brother Rolddy Muñoz. While Rolddy progressed slowly and was still pitching in High-A when Roddery made his big league debut, he was still in the Braves system whereas Roddery had changed organizations a number of times. He was claimed on waivers by the Washington Nationals on July 17, 2023 after the Braves had needed to clear his spot on the 40-man roster, then was claimed on waivers again, this time by the Pittsburgh Pirates, on December 1st before being purchased by the Marlins on December 20th. He had gone 8-4, 4.66 in 22 starts between Class A and AA in 2022 to earn a promotion to the Braves' 40-man roster, but was the victim of a roster crunch in 2023. After being picked up by the Nationals, he went 1-3, 6.98 in 12 games for the Rochester Red Wings, explaining why a couple of teams had been unwilling to tie him to a roster spot in spite of obvious talent. He had started the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp but had a 10.97 ERA after 3 starts when the Marlins gave him a call in desperation.
