Rochester Colts

From BR Bullpen

For one season the Rochester, NY team in the International League went by the name the Rochester Colts. Previously the Rochester Hustlers, the club took on the Colts name in 1921. Under the legendary George Stallings the club had a great season, going 100-68 - but they finished 20 games behind the Baltimore Orioles, who were at the peak of their IL dynasty. The Rochester team boasted a stellar outfield of Maurice Archdeacon (.325, 53 SB, 166 runs in 164 games), Homer Summa (.333, .511 slugging, 142 runs) and Fats Fothergill (.338, .538 slugging, 23 triples to tie for the league lead with 3B Norm McMillan). The most famous player was 1B Fred Merkle, who hit .340 and slugged .486; he led the team in doubles (45) and hits (216) and scored 132 times. The veteran even stole 32 bases. Jack Wisner (22-11, 3.44), Sheriff Blake (21-13, 3.33) and Jimmie Keenan (9-0, 2.84) were the key pitchers. The next year the team was renamed the Rochester Tribe.
