Robin Lund

Biographical Information[edit]

Robin Lund is a pitching coach.

Born in Alberta, Canada, he moved to Lewiston, ID during his high school years, staying with a foster family, in order to be able to play baseball. He went on to play in junior college at Spokane Falls Community College, then earned degrees in education and exercise science from Whitworth College and Eastern Washington University. His studies culminated when he obtained a doctorate in exercise science from the University of Idaho.

He was an associate professor in kinesiology at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) for 17 years, from 2002 to 2018. During his graduate studies and years as a professor, Lund volunteered with a number of baseball teams.

In late 2018 the New York Yankees hired University of Iowa assistant coaches Desi Druschel and Joe Migliaccio, leaving the Hawkeyes head coach Rick Heller with two vacancies to fill in short order. In January 2019 Heller hired former major leaguer Tom Gorzelanny as pitching coach and Robin Lund as hitting coach. Heller and Lund knew each other from their days at UNI. After the 2019 season Gorzelanny moved to Director of Player Development for the Hawkeyes and Lund took over as the team's pitching coach. Lund received notice for using analytics and scientific data from physiology and biomechanics in working with pitchers there, anticipating a trend that would hit Major League Baseball within a few years.

From Iowa, Lund was hired by the Detroit Tigers before the 2023 season to be one of two assistant pitching coaches working under pitching coach Chris Fetter alongside former major league pitcher Juan Nieves.
