Biographical Information[edit]

Roberto Baldoquin was a very high-profile signing by the Los Angeles Angels in 2015 despite middling numbers in his three seasons in the Cuban Serie Nacional. He had been a bench player for Cuba when they won Silver in the 2009 World Youth Championship. He was one of many Cubans signed by major league teams around that time. He received an $8 million dollar bonus, and as a result the Angels had to pay a total of around $14 million if the luxury tax penalties for exceeding their international bonus limits are included in the deal. [1]

A shortstop, third baseman and second baseman, Baldoquin spent 2015-2019 in the minors, hitting an overall .241 with relatively few walks and not much power. The highest he reached was AA ball with the Mobile BayBears in 2018. He was released by the Angels in April 2020. After a major campaign for the 2021 Lexington Legends, he got a shot with the St. Louis Cardinals but struggled in AA and AAA in 2022. He then returned to Cuba and appeared for the Cuban national team in the 2023 Pan American Games, hitting .385/.467/.615, with a long ball off Colombia's Randy Consuegra.
