Roberto Santana (Milloito)
Roberto Santana played for the Puerto Rican national team.
He won five Puerto Rican amateur titles as a player with the Mulos de Juncos. He was with Puerto Rico for the 1983 Pan American Games and 1984 Amateur World Series. He hit .369/?/.435 in the 1986 Amateur World Series, which he led with six steals, one ahead of Jung-il Ryu. The shortstop led Puerto Rico in average as well and scored 10 runs in their 11 games. He was with Puerto Rico for the 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games. In the 1987 Pan American Games, he won a Bronze Medal with Puerto Rico.
As Puerto Rico's second baseman in the 1988 Baseball World Cup, he hit .200/.351/.367 with 8 runs in 9 games, stealing 2 bases in 3 tries and handling 38 chances error-free. He tied Efraín García for 3rd on the team in runs. Puerto Rico finished 3rd with Santana in the 1988 Olympics but baseball was not a medal sport yet. He also played in the 1989 Intercontinental Cup, winning another Bronze.
In 1995, he was inducted into the Puerto Rican Amateur Hall of Fame. He was a coach for the Criollos de Caguas when they won the Puerto Rican League in 2001. His sons Roberto Carlos Santana and Roberto (Concord) Santana both played in Puerto Rico's amateur league, where the elder Roberto was a GM after his playing days.
