Biographical Information

Robert Whitlow served as the first Athletic Director for the Chicago Cubs when the position was created in 1963. He remained with the organization for two years.

After UCLA, Whitlow attended the United States Military Academy, where he earned letters in football as a tackle, baseball as a pitcher, and basketball. He earned his pilots' wings and flew bombers and P-51 Mustangs over Europe in World War II. He received the Silver Star, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, and eight Air Medals for his service

In the late 1940s, he worked as an assistant coach for the Army football team at the United States Military Academy. He was then selected for an officer exchange program with the Mexican military academy. While in Mexico, some of his duties included coaching the Mexican cadets in football.

In 1955, Whitlow was made the head football coach and athletic director at the United States Air Force Academy, a position he held for one year. When he retired from the Air Force in 1963, he joined the Cubs.

He also was involved in bringing NFL football to Arizona in the 1980s and owned a minor league hockey club.
