Rob Montalvo played seven seasons in the minors, including parts of five at AAA, but never made the majors.
The Toronto Blue Jays took Montalvo in the 7th round of the 1988 amateur draft, one round before Tim Pugh. He split the summer between the Myrtle Beach Blue Jays (.189/.333/.203 in 52 G) and Dunedin Blue Jays (.146/.340/.171 in 14 G). In 1990, he was again the prototypical light-hitting shortstop, batting .183/.312/.200 in 38 games for the St. Catharines Blue Jays and .200/.257/.208 in 45 contests with Myrtle Beach. He was with three teams in 1991 - Dunedin (.230/.281/.247 in 86 G, .971 FLD% at SS), the Knoxville Blue Jays (.161/.333/.194 in 15 G) and the Syracuse Chiefs (0 for 3).
By 1992, he had moved from shortstop to more of a utility role, playing second, short and third regularly for Knoxville (.167/.286/.181 in 32 G) and Syracuse (.232/.303/.315 in 66 G). In '93, he also saw action at catcher and outfield but mostly backed up Domingo Cedeno at SS and Ray Giannelli at 2B with Syracuse; he hit .214/.275/.248. In 1994, Montalvo hit .229/.276/.291 in 74 games for Syracuse and was 7-for-17 with a double and 3 walks for Dunedin. He played all four infield positions as well as the outfield that year. He ended his career in 1995, going 1-for-26 with two walks for Syracuse and hitting .224/.347/.328 in 39 games for the independent Thunder Bay Whiskey Jacks.
For his career, Montalvo had produced at a .210/.296/.248 clip with 168 runs and 113 RBI in 565 games. He fielded .957 in 298 games at short, .965 in 139 at 2B, .915 in 47 at 3B and played error-free ball in 29 games in the outfield, 21 at first and one at catcher.
