Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Robert Jarvis played in the minor leagues from 1954 to 1959 in the Cleveland Indians (1954-1956), New York Yankees (1957-1958) and Cincinnati Reds (1959) systems. He won a minor league batting title.
He split 1954 between the Tucson Cowboys (.310/.414/.423 in 48 G) and Spartanburg Peaches (8 G). His best season came in 1955, when he hit .361/.444/.520 with 157 hits, 14 triples, 17 steals and 85 runs and 226 total bases in 117 games for the Peaches. He led the Tri-State League in batting average (four points ahead of Bordie Waddle), hits (9 ahead of Waddle) and triples that season. He tied Rogers McKee for 5th in doubles (26), was second to Paul Jones in slugging and steals (4 back), was second in outfield putouts (259, 11 behind Waddle) but was second in outfield errors (14, one behind Robert Reid.
Jarvis hit .284 and slugged .353 for the 1956 Reading Indians, making the Eastern League top 10 in average. In '57, he reached his peak of AA with the New Orleans Pelicans, batting .275/.357/.357, hitting only three home runs. Russ Snyder, Ken Hunt and Frank Wehner were the other regular outfielders. He split 1958 between the Binghamton Triplets (.207/?/.317 in 53 G) and Sioux City Soos (.279/?/.403 in 42 G). In '59, he wrapped up with the Topeka Hawks (.217/.344/.325 in 33 G) and New Orleans (.246/.356/.321 in 76 G). He had hit around .282 for his minor league career, but with only about 20 HR in 638 games.
He was a star basketball player at the University of Mississippi and later became one of its winningest coaches. He was inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and was named to its Basketball All-Century Team in 2009.
