Biographical information

Rob Adkins is a former minor league baseball pitcher who played from 1991 to 1994 in the Toronto Blue Jays farm system. He played in independent baseball in 1995.

Originally selected by the Blue Jays in the 28th round (745th overall) of the 1990 amateur draft, Adkins started his career the following year with the GCL Blue Jays. There, as a reliever, he got off to a very successful start. In 24 games, he pitched 34 2/3 innings, striking out 52 batters and posting a 1.82 ERA. He saved 10 games and finished 22. He led the team in games, games finished, saves, ERA (for all pitchers with at least 10 IP) and he was second in strikeouts, his 52 trailing Harry Muir's 55. His control however was suspect in 1991 - in those 34+ innings, he walked 29 batters.

His career quickly took a turn for the worst in 1992. Splitting time between the St. Catharines Blue Jays and Myrtle Beach Hurricanes, Adkins pitched in a total of 25 games, striking out 44 batters in 39 1/3 innings. He posted an ERA over 7.50 and he walked 58 batters.

1993 was slightly more successful for him. He was used mostly as a starter, and in 14 games - 11 of which he started - he posted a 3-3 record with a 4.74 ERA and 37 walks and 25 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings. He pitched for the Medicine Hat Blue Jays that year. His fielding was quite an anomaly in 1993. He committed nine errors in those 14 games, and his fielding percentage was .308.

He pitched in only four games in 1994, all for St. Catharines. In 5 1/3 innings, he walked 12 batters, struck out two and posted a 11.81 ERA. He had a 7.71 ERA in 4 2/3 innings for the Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League in 1995.

Overall, Adkins went 4-6 with a 5.26 ERA in his career. In 69 games - 12 of which he started - he pitched 133 1/3 innings, allowing 98 hits, 100 runs and 78 earned runs. He finished 35 games and saved 11. He walked 144 batters and struck out 126.
