Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Riley Stephens pitched in the Chicago White Sox system from 1988 to 1992. He spent two full seasons and part of a third at Triple-A, but never reached the majors.

He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 16th round of the 1985 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He did sign after the White Sox took him in the 58th round of the 1988 amateur draft, a couple picks after infielder Shannon Penn and one ahead of pitcher Jeff Patterson. With the Utica Blue Sox in 1988, he went 8-0 with a 0.92 ERA in 22 relief appearances, allowing just 34 hits in 58 2/3 innings. In 1989, between the Sarasota White Sox and Birmingham Barons, he went 14-7, 2.12 in 25 starts; he had 7 complete games and 5 shutouts in 174 innings. he was named Chicago's #10 prospect by Baseball America going into 1990, but he slipped to 7-10, 3.76 that year, reaching Triple-A for the first time. Back at Triple-A in 1991, he was 3-4, 3.42 in 53 games (1 start). He finished up by going 5-3, 5.09 in 1992.

Overall, Stephens went 37-24 with a 3.06 ERA in 174 games (48 starts). He was 8-7, 4.21 in 88 games (7 starts) at Triple-A.
