Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ricky Karcher started his college career at the University of Michigan but transferred to Walters State Community College after his freshman season in 2016. It was from Walters State that he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 13th round of the 2017 amateur draft.
In his major league debut for the Reds on June 12, 2023, he was credited with a save by protecting a one-run lead in a 5-4 win against the Kansas City Royals in the bottom of the 10th inning. He had a 9.27 ERA with the AAA Louisville Bats before his call-up, but the Reds were short of pitchers and gave him a chance nonetheless, and he rewarded their confidence by coming through in a big situation, in spite of command issues that saw him record just 9 strikes out of 21 pitches, and missing the plate by a lot on numerous pitches. He started off by walking leadoff man Bobby Witt Jr. but Michael Massey messed up a bunt attempt, popping up for the first out. After a double steal by Witt and the designated runner, Edward Olivares popped out as well, and he got Maikel Garcia on a fly ball to the outfield to end the game. He was the first Reds pitcher since the introduction of the save as an official statistic in 1969 to record one in his major league debut.
His father Rick Karcher played minor league baseball.
