Biographical Information

Ricky Adams spent parts of three seasons in the big leagues.

Signed at 18 after being drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round (14th) in 1977, Ricky spent his first season with the Gulf Coast League Astros, batting .225 (34-for-151) in 39 games. He spent 1978 and 1979 with the Daytona Beach Astros, hitting .222 and .292. On April 4, 1980 he was released. On May 2, he signed with the California Angels, spending the next three seasons with the Salinas Angels, El Paso Diablos, and Holyoke Millers before getting a shot at major league pitching.

Adams debuted in 1982, playing 8 games and batting .143. He was with the Angels again in 1983 where he appeared in 58 games and hit .250. Ricky was sent to the AAA Edmonton Trappers for the last half of the season, finishing with a .313 batting average. He spent the entirety of 1984 back in Edmonton, hitting .286 in 105 games. A minor league free agent, on Christmas Day he signed with the San Francisco Giants. Ricky spent 54 games with the Giants in 1985, hitting .228 (23-for-121). This got him shipped to the Phoenix Giants where he appeared in 42 games and hit .305 (47-for-154). He appeared in only 18 games in 1986 for the Phoenix Firebirds and, in an unannounced transaction, spent 1987, his final year, with two Angels affiliates, the Edmonton Trappers and the Midland Angels.

Adams spent 11 seasons in professional baseball. He managed a major league batting average of .215 and a fielding percentage of .962. His minor league batting average topped out at .273 and he fielded .970. He died in 2011 after a long battle with cancer.
