Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Rick Down played seven seasons in the minors in the Montreal Expos organization.

After his playing career ended, Down was an assistant baseball coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for several years.

Down was a member of the California Angels coaching staff in 1987 and 1988 and was the New York Yankees hitting coach from 1993 to 1995. He later was a Baltimore Orioles coach from 1996 to 1998, a Los Angeles Dodgers coach in 1999 and 2000, and a Boston Red Sox coach in 2001. In 2002 and 2003, he was again the Yankees hitting coach. He joined the New York Mets staff as hitting coach in 2005, but was relieved of his duties after the 2007 All-Star Game and was replaced by Howard Johnson. In 2011 Down became the minor league hitting coordinator for the Seattle Mariners. Down was hitting coach of the Spokane Indians in 2014-2015.

In 1997 he was one of the finalists to become the first manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays but lost out to Larry Rothschild.
