Ricardo Solís was a Mexican League pitcher for 18 years.
Solís debuted in 1982 with the Azules de Coatzacoalcos, going 1-5 with a 3.33 ERA, then had a 4-5, 3.29 record and one save the next year. Moving to the Cafeteros de Cordoba, the southpaw went 9-12 with a save and a 4.18 ERA in 1984. In '85, he starred for the Diablos Rojos del México at 19-4, 3.67. He was second in the Mexican League in wins, 2 behind leader Jesus Rios. Ricardo fell to 10-10, 4.82 in 1986 and was 12-8 with a 4.72 ERA in 1987.
Switching to the Saraperos de Saltillo, the Tonalá native was 17-11 with a 2.60 ERA. He struck out 152, 37 more than in any other season. He finished 6th in ERA, between Jesús Moreno and Angel Moreno. He led in starts (30) and complete games (21) and tied Jesús Moreno for the most shutouts (7). In the 1988-1989 Mexican Pacific League, he was 7-9 with a 2.59 ERA for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. With the 1990 Saraperos, the 29-year-old turned in a 9-7, 3.92 season with one save. That winter, he was excellent for Hermosillo, going 9-2 with a 1.79 ERA, 4th-lowest in the LMP. In 1990-1991, he went 8-4 with a 1.95 ERA for Hermosillo, with only 21 walks in 124 innings, finishing 6th in ERA. He missed all of 1991, presumably due to injury. In 1991-1992, he went 8-4 with a 2.51 ERA for the Naranjeros, walking 20 in 124 innings and improving to 5th in ERA. He won the MVP award. He had a 1-0, 2.40 record in the 1992 Caribbean Series.
The little lefty went 15-12 with a 2.42 ERA for the 1992 Saraperos and also appeared briefly with the Indianapolis Indians (0-2, 3.75 in 2 games), his only time north of the border. In 1992-1993, he fell to 3-6, 3.61 for Hermosillo. He split the summer of '93 between Saltillo and the Leones de Yucatan, going 7-11 with a 4.43 ERA. He improved in a return engagement with the 1994 Leones (11-6, 2.98). In 1995, he had a 9-9, 4.92 record, followed by 9-8, 2.83 in 1996. He split 1997 between Yucatan and the Petroleros de Minatitlán, going only 2-11 with a 5.05 ERA.
Returning to Cordoba in 1998 after a 13-year absence, he posted a 7-9, 4.04 record, followed by 8-8, 4.60 in 1999. He ended up in 2000 with the Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo at 0-4, 8.48 and two saves, his first year working primarily out of the bullpen since he was a rookie.
Overall, Ricardo was 163-151 with six saves and a 3.99 ERA in the Mexican League. He pitched 474 games, completing 101 of 385 starts, allowing 2,889 hits in 2,506 1/3 innings, striking out 1,239 and walking 735. At his career's end, he was 14th in league history in starts, 12th in losses ans 12th in earned runs allowed (1,110).
He made the 2007 Salón de la Fama ballot and has remained on the ballot through 2011 but has yet to be enshrined.
