Biographical Information

Ric Wilson played as high as AA then became a scout.

Wilson was drafted four times. The Montréal Expos took the catcher in the 14th round of the January 1979 draft, the St. Louis Cardinals chose him in the second round of the June 1980 secondary draft and the Seattle Mariners picked him in the 5th round of the January 1980 draft. During this time, he was an All-American in junior college. Transferring to Arizona State, he was on the team that won the 1981 College World Series. Seattle drafted him again, this time in the first round of the June 1981 secondary draft.

Ric began his pro career with the 1981 Bellingham Mariners but hit just .204/.293/.299. He did lead Northwest League backstops in fielding (.981) and managed to be one of three NWL catchers picked to the postseason All-Star team. In 1982, he put up a .221/.312/.356 line for the Wausau Timbers. He made 19 errors, leading Midwest League catchers (he also had 2 errors in 11 games at 1B). With the 1983 Bakersfield Mariners, his offensive output was similar (.249/.311/.367, again 9 HR) but he made 23 errors. He did not lead California League catchers in errors, finishing second, 13 behind Frank Castro, while his 22 passed balls tied for second, 20 behind Jon Debus.

Making it to AA in 1984, Wilson batted .196/.291/.242 for the Chattanooga Lookouts. His 12 passed balls tied him for second in the Southern League, 3 behind Mitchell Ashmore. Ric split 1985 between the Lookouts (.194/.263/.194 in 27 G) and Salinas Spurs (.280/.326/.290 in 28 G). He ended his playing career with the 1986 Spurs, batting .284/.357/.450 in 36 games.

Overall, Wilson hit .229/.308/.334 in 430 minor league games. He fielded .971 in 358 games at catcher.

After his playing career ended, Wilson coached for the Wausau Timbers in 1987, then became a long-time scout. He worked for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1992-2002, with stints as an area scout (1992-1994), southwestern supervisor (1994-1995) and west coast supervisor (1996-2002). From 2003-2010, he was national crosschecker for the Angels. He became the Angels' Scouting Director in October of 2010. He was relieved of his duties in August in August 2016 and replaced by Matt Swanson.
