Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Frank Castro spent five years in the San Diego Padres minor league system.

He was originally drafted by the Houston Astros in the 10th round of the 1978 amateur draft out of high school, a couple picks after catcher Tom Wieghaus, but opted not to sign. He did sign after the Padres took him 26th overall in the 1981 amateur draft, two picks after pitcher Al Lachowicz. They would take Tony Gwynn two rounds later.

He began his professional career with the Double-A Amarillo Gold Sox, slashing .274/.345/.388 with four home runs and 31 RBI in 59 games. The promising start was interrupted, however, as he missed all of 1982 due to injuries. In 1983, he returned, spending most of the year with the Single-A Reno Padres. He also spent 1983 at Single-A, struggling with a .225/.330/.322 line in 124 games for the Miami Marlins. Though he struggled in his return to Double-A in 1984, he spent 1985 -- his final campaign -- at that level and had the best year of his career, hitting .295/.354/.492 with 12 home runs and 62 RBI in 102 games for the Beaumont Golden Gators.

Overall, he hit .254/.327/.385 with 36 home runs and 209 RBI in 456 games.
