Biographical Information[edit]
Red Gaskill was a long-time scout.
Gaskill served in World War II, surviving the sinking of his ship in the Philippines. He played semi-pro ball before going into scouting. He worked for Union Carbide then spent 35 years working for the New York Mets, Montreal Expos, Cleveland Indians and California Angels. He signed Dave Clark, John Farrell and Greg Swindell. As a bird dog, he gave Red Murff the heads-up on high schooler Nolan Ryan. Ryan said "[Gaskill and Murff] were instrumental in my being drafted by the Mets and allowing me to pursue my professional career," Ryan said after Gaskill's death.
