Biographical Information

Ray Morehart played three seasons in the majors. He hit .318 in 1926, but is better remembered as part of the 1927 Yankees.

Ray was born in Abner, TX right before the turn of the century in December 1899. He played several seasons for the Flint Vehicles in Michigan before coming to the majors in 1924. He went back to the minors in 1925, hitting .330 for Wichita.

He came back to the majors with the 1926 White Sox, playing second base for manager Eddie Collins, who also played second base for the team. After the season he and Johnny Grabowski were traded to the Yankees for second baseman Aaron Ward. Tony Lazzeri was the 1927 Yankees regular second baseman, appearing in 113 games at the position, while Morehart was in 53 games at second base. Ray got playing time when Lazzeri was moved to shortstop.

Morehart played for St. Paul in 1928-29 and was with other minor league teams through 1933.

His obituary in the New York Times mentioned that he had once in 1926 gotten 9 hits in a double-header, a record that had never been broken.
