Biographical Information

Pitcher Randy Stein was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1971 amateur draft and made his pro debut that summer with the Aberdeen Pheasants. With the Miami Orioles the next year, he went 11-5 with a 1.77 ERA, and in 1973 posted a 14-6 record and 2.83 ERA for the Asheville Orioles. He was one of a number of talented young pitchers in the Orioles' system who could not reach the majors because the team was so strong on the mound.

After a brief stint in the New York Yankees system in 1977, Stein became a free agent and signed with the Milwaukee Brewers for 1978. He made his big league debut on April 17 and overall went 3-2 with a 5.33 ERA in 31 games. After starting the following season with the Triple A Vancouver Canadians, he was dealt to the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Paul Mitchell in early June. Soon he was back in the majors, going 2-3 with a 5.88 ERA in 23 games for the Mariners in 1979. He spent the majority of the next two years with the Spokane Indians, making 5 big league appearances with Seattle in 1981.

Stein was released by the M's and signed with the Chicago Cubs prior to the 1982 season. He went 7-3 with 10 saves for the Iowa Cubs that year and earned a brief September call up with Chicago. He was back with Iowa in 1983, his final year in pro ball.

Following his baseball days, Stein was an executive in the title insurance field. He died at age 58 in 2011, after suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
