Biographical Information

Ralph "Commy" Comstock pitched three years in the majors, covering his bases by logging time in all of the big leagues of the day, split among four teams.

Comstock claimed he was born in Sylvania, OH, a suburb of Toledo located on the border of Michigan. According to official records, however, he was born in Michigan three years earlier than his claimed birth date of 1890. Thus, he started in pro ball at 20 in the Ohio State League. He played nine seasons in the minors, changing teams frequently, posting a record of 86-60, including three no-hitters.

Ralph made his major league debut at age 25 with the Detroit Tigers in 1913, pitching 10 times with a 2-5, 5.37 record. He came up for three games with the Boston Red Sox in 1915, with an ERA of 2.00 in 9 innings, before being sold to the Cincinnati Reds. He never played for them as he jumped to the Federal League, dealing 12 times whilst going 3-3 for the Pittsburgh Rebels. That season, he kept up the traveling by spending some time with the Providence Grays of the International League, going 15-6. Three years later, in 1918 he was back in Pittsburgh, only this time in the National League with the Pittsburgh Pirates. After going 5-6, 3.00 in 15 games with six complete games, his big league days were over.

After retiring from baseball, he was a traveling insurance agent for Mutual of Omaha. He died in Toledo at 75.
