Biographical Information[edit]

The brother-in-law of Frank Campos, Rafael Sangil spent four years in the minor leagues after a succesful career as pitcher and hitter in Cuban amateur ball. He debuted with the 1944 Portsmouth Cubs, going 8-7 with a 3.06 ERA; his specialty was control, walking 29 in 144 innings. In '45, Rafael went 3-2, 4.88 for Portsmouth and 11-4, 2.31 for the Statesville Cubs; only one regularly used pitcher had a lower ERA in the North Carolina State League. With many American players returning from military action, Sangil did not play in 1946. In 1947, Rafael went 14-14 with a 3.18 ERA for the St. Petersburg Saints to tie two other pitchers for the club lead in wins. In 1949, Rafael was just 1-5 with a 6.65 for the Sherman-Denison Twins and hit .259 with one home run and 14 RBI. An accident that injured his left arm forced him to retire from baseball.
