Biographical Information[edit]

Phil played one year in the minors with the Eugene Emeralds in 1993, where he threw fastball-slider pitches, completing an ERA of 2.44 over 48 innings. His career in the minors was cut short due to elbow, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries. He allowed three runs and five walks in 4 1/3 IP in the 1998 Baseball World Cup. He returned to US baseball in 1999, playing with Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs in the independent Northern League. He was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in the 1999 Intercontinental Cup as Australia won their lone world baseball title as of 2024; he beat Kevin Pincavitch of #4 Team USA. He started the title game but allowed two runs (one earned) in one inning against Cuba; Adrian Meagher relieved and the bullpen allowed one run in the next ten as Australia prevailed. He remained with Albany until 2001, then played ball in 2003 with the Allentown Ambassadors of the Northeast League.

Returning to his native Australia, he was selling real estate when in 2006 he received the call to throw for team Australia at the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic. By this time, he hadn't faced pro-ballers in four years, yet he managed to hold Venezuela to just two hits and a run over four innings.
