Biographical Information[edit]
Pete Gilbert played four seasons in the majors (1890-1892 and 1894), getting most of his playing time with the Baltimore Orioles (NL) in 1891, for whom he was the regular third baseman. While not a strong hitter, he achieved a notable 28 hit-by-pitch that year, second in the National League behind teammate Curt Welch, who had 36. The Orioles as a team had made it a specialty to reach base on a hit-by-pitch, and league leaders in the 1890s were usually team members, the most adept at the art being SS Hughie Jennings. Gilbert's professional career ran eleven years (1888-98).
Major League Baseball Profiles says that he was ill for most of the 1892 season, and played in 1893 for the Springfield Ponies. He sat on the bench for the Brooklyn Grooms for much of the 1894 season until he was released and signed by the Louisville Colonels, for whom he hit over .300 over the remainder of the 1894 season, his final one in the majors.
Defensively, his major league fielding average in four years was .851, while the league fielding average was .872.
