Biographical Information[edit]
First baseman/pitcher Perry Roberts played in the minor leagues from 1943 to 1955. He began his professional career at 18 years old.
He hit .333/.356/.398 with 127 hits in 99 games between two clubs his first year, then a couple years later, in 1945, hit .349/.372/.470 with 8 home runs, 100 RBI and 38 stolen bases in 107 games for the Kingsport Cherokees. 1947 was his career season, as he hit .389/.418/.570 with 15 home runs, 152 RBI, 49 doubles, 115 runs scored, 225 hits and 19 stolen bases in 135 games for the Greenville Lions. He led the Alabama State League in hits, at-bats (586), doubles, RBI, batting average, slugging percentage (.570, tied with Andy Archiopoli) and total bases (334). His marks for at-bats, hits, RBI, doubles and total bases were all Alabama State League/Alabama-Florida League records. Over the final four years of his career, he hit .356, .347, .307 and .358, respectively. In his final campaign, in addition to his .358 mark, he slugged .590 with a .405 on-base percentage in 72 games for the West Palm Beach Indians. His statistical record is incomplete, but per records available, he hit around .336 in 13 seasons.
Of note on the mound, he went 12-6 in 45 games between two clubs in 1950 and 15-2 with a 1.94 ERA in 23 games (15 starts) for the DeLand Red Hats in 1952. Per records available, he was about 42-25 in 137 games.
In the 1952 Rule V Draft, he was taken by the Wichita Falls Spudders from DeLand in the B-level round of selections.
