Pennant race
The pennant race refers to the period of time during August and September when teams are racing to secure a spot in the postseason. Before 1969, teams raced for the pennant, a synonym for the league title and the right to play in the World Series. With division play, the term pennant race refers to any team fighing to make the playoffs.
The expression is used as the title of the book Pennant Race, a diary of the 1961 season kept by Cincinnati Reds pitcher Jim Brosnan.
