He helped his country win Gold in the 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games, their first baseball Gold in a Central American and Caribbean Games; he got the critical win over Cuba, the traditional powerhouse. [1] He signed with the San Francisco Giants. In 1963, he was 5-3 with a 4.36 ERA for the Fresno Giants (70 K:10 BB in 66 IP) and 2-1 with a 3.94 ERA for the Salem Rebels.
Spending all of '64 with Fresno, he posted a 18-6, 2.88 record. He led the California League in wins (four ahead of Paul Alspach and Jan Martin), tied Gary Maloy for 3rd in complete games (14), tied for third in shutouts (3) and was second in ERA to Ed Barnowski. [2] Among Giants farmhands, he led in victories. He tied for 4th in the minors in wins with Jimmie Brown, Pete Craig and Don Gregson.
In '65, he moved primarily to relief, still doing well for Fresno (7-3, 2.36 in 22 G) and now the Springfield Giants (2-1, 0.75 in 8 G). He also pitched in the Dominican League; a liner by Pete Rose significantly hurt his career. [3] Returning in 1967, he had a 11-13, 4.09 record for the Petroleros de Poza Rica. He split 1968 between two Mexican League teams, going a combined 2-4 with a 7.06 ERA. He had gone 47-31 in his minor league career.
